Civil Engineer – Cable Route

NES Group Ltd

NESFircroft continue to partner with industry leaders in the onshore cabling space. We are currently looking for a Cable Route Civil Engineer to join on a long term consultancy basis. This role is required to provide civil engineering services for the onshore cable route and HDD landfall: FEED/detailed design reviews, constructability and value-engineering input planning-condition technical responses, ITT scope and appendices.

The Cable Route Civil Engineer will provide civil-engineering and constructability support to the projects Onshore Package across the export-cable route, HDD landfall, and shared onshore civils interfaces. This is part of a flagship project for the client, which is at the forefront of the green energy transition

Detailed Work Scope
Review civil FEED deliverables (BoD/design basis, typical trench details, crossings schedules/drawings, drainage/SuDS approach, reinstatement standards, compound/access layouts,) and issue consolidated comments to designers.
Review geotechnical and SI outputs relevant to ONSS civils; validate assumptions for platform build-up, cut/fill, peat/soft ground treatment, settlement risk, groundwater, and drainage capacity.
Support development of constructability notes and construction sequencing assumptions for inclusion in ITT (temporary works, traffic management, watercourse/crossing methods, winter working constraints, spoil/peat handling, haul roads, compounds and welfare).
Support definition of battery limits and interfaces for cable route civils (HDD interfaces, nearshore/onshore transition, route compounds, third-party crossings, and substation cable entry interface).
Maintain and update the Design Risk Register, coordinating closure of design-risk items with designers and relevant stakeholders.
Ensure CDM 2015 considerations are embedded (safe-by-design, residual risk communication, temporary works/maintenance considerations).
Provide targeted contributions to Employer’s Requirements / technical schedules for civil works (scope clarity, acceptance criteria, testing/ITPs, deliverables, hold points).
Participate in bidder clarification responses and technical evaluation workshops (capacity-aware), supporting technical close-out ahead of contract award.
Identify and communicate key civils risks and recommended tender clarifications to protect bankability and delivery (ground risk, drainage/SuDS, access, temporary works, utilities/diversions, third-party crossings and permits, reinstatement, environmental constraints).
Work with Consents to ensure civils design and construction assumptions align with planning conditions and discharge strategy (CEMP/CTMP, drainage/SEPA expectations, roads authority interfaces, PWS/peat/water commitments as applicable).
Provide technical input to condition responses where civils design basis or construction methods must be evidenced.
Support Commercial and Land teams by translating design/constructability needs into land requirements (temporary land, access routes, compounds, laydown, drainage outfalls, reinstatement requirements) and provide technical inputs for voluntary agreements where civil works impose constraints or require additional rights (access, drainage easements, temporary occupation, reinstatement standards).
Training & Competency
Suitable qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering with substantial demonstrable experience in transmission infrastructure delivery.
Demonstrable experience delivering civil work scopes (export cables / utilities / highways / pipelines), including trenching, reinstatement, drainage continuity, and working width constraints.
Solid grasp of ground risk and how it translates into civils requirements: SI interpretation, shoring/dewatering approaches, peat/soft ground treatment, settlement risk, groundwater constraints, and spoil handling assumptions.
Working knowledge of HDD civils interfaces (entry/exit compounds, drill pad civils, access, temporary drainage, reinstatement, and constraint management).
Proven track record in civil design review, constructability assessment, and field delivery/assurance on multidisciplinary projects.
Understanding of roads authority interfaces and approvals relevant to cable route civils (traffic management assumptions, reinstatement standards, and statutory permitting processes as applicable).
Working knowledge of UK H&S regulation and CDM 2015 (pre-construction duties and design-risk management).
Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces (civil, electrical, environmental, land/consents) and integrate them into tender/delivery documentation.
Strong stakeholder communication skills; able to chair interface meetings and drive closure of actions.
Competent with Microsoft 365/SharePoint and document control systems
