Our client is a regional civil engineering contractor, with a reputation of delivering high-profile and exciting regional projects. They are recruiting for a Lead Commercial Manager to manage the commercial team, delivering the commercials on civil engineering contracts, predominantly within the highways sector. This is the perfect role for someone keen to lead a team of talented Quantity Surveyors and shape the commercial change and development processes within the business.
The role:
* Heading the commercial performance of the business and having full commercial responsibility across company frameworks & projects
* Working closely with delivery teams and clients
* Driving revenue and margin: monitoring financial performance metrics, trigger early actions, and engage in monthly CVR reviews to identify variances and pursue remedial actions
* Steering commercial governance, ensuring robust reporting, strong financial management (minimising WIP, prompt settlement of issues, timely approvals), and compliance with contractual/regulatory standards
* Leading the NEC contract management: contractual terms, dispute resolution, and risk/opportunity management across all forms of NEC
* Supporting bids and pricing, advising on ways to mitigate risk and enhance profitability
* Ensuring a robust supply chain
* Championing the success of the commercial people by building a successful team: ensuring effective 1‑to‑1s and development plans, and upskill through training and coaching
Skills:
* Proven success in a commercial management position within a civil engineering environment
* Having the ability to influence, negotiate and resolve disputes
* NEC contracts expert, preferably including Highways Term Service Agreements
* A background of working as both Principal Contractor and Tier 2
* Experience of managing the commercial function of frameworks
* Being a strong leader who maximises team performance
* A strong track record in building effective relationships and leading teams
* Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
* Professional membership (RICS/CICES) desirable but not essential
* Highways experience preferred
