M&E Commercial Director

James Lewis Recruitment

M&E Commercial Director

If you have outgrown being the commercial lead on one project, this is your chance to shape the commercial direction of an entire business.

You are capable of more than running CVRs, managing disputes, and firefighting procurement issues on a single scheme. You want the scope to influence standards across multiple projects, build stronger commercial discipline across the group, and operate at a level where your decisions improve performance well beyond one site.

This is not a project-only role. It is a senior, company-wide position with responsibility for strengthening commercial governance, supporting major bids, guiding risk strategy, and raising the standard of commercial delivery across the wider business.

While your background will almost certainly be rooted in M&E, the remit reaches across the full project picture. The business delivers complex schemes where CSA and M&E are tightly interdependent, and this role sits across those interfaces. You will be leading commercial activity through multi-disciplinary teams, helping ensure that civils, structure, architecture, services, commissioning, and specialist packages are commercially aligned rather than managed in silos.

You will help shape how the company buys work, manages risk, reports performance, and protects margin.

You will set the commercial tone.

Your focus will be split between leading commercial strategy on a flagship multi-phase campus development and building a stronger, more consistent commercial function across the company. That means creating better structure, sharper controls, and clearer accountability across live projects and future opportunities.

What you’ll do

Lead the commercial function on a major multi-phase campus scheme, setting the strategy for reporting, procurement, risk, change, and client engagement across a complex live environment.

Provide oversight across the wider business, supporting projects, senior operational leaders, and pre-construction teams with commercial direction, challenge, and decision-making.

Shape commercial governance across the company. Improve procedures, approvals, reporting standards, and controls so the business can scale without losing grip.

Support bids, new phases, and key tenders with commercial input around pricing strategy, contractual position, procurement route, and risk allocation.

Lead negotiation on major contracts and subcontracts, making sure scope is clear, liabilities are understood, and the business is properly protected.

Oversee CVRs, forecasting, cashflow, and risk reporting, giving the board clear visibility across both project performance and wider business exposure.

Drive a disciplined approach to change control, entitlement, and final account strategy on major schemes, particularly where package interfaces and programme pressure create commercial risk.

Work closely with commercial managers and QSs across the business, not to do their job for them, but to improve consistency, mentor capability, and raise the overall standard.

Lead across multi-disciplinary project teams where CSA and M&E commercial decisions need to be coordinated, balanced, and aligned to the wider delivery strategy.

Act as a senior point of contact for directors, operational leaders, and client teams where commercial leadership needs to be credible, calm, and commercially sharp.

What you’ll need

You have already operated in a senior commercial leadership role for a main contractor, specialist contractor, or M&E contractor and are comfortable working across both project delivery and business-level strategy.

You understand large, technically demanding schemes and ideally have exposure to data centres, mission-critical environments, or other complex projects where programme, coordination, and risk all carry serious commercial weight.

You are strong on NEC and JCT contracts, experienced in negotiating high-value packages, and capable of seeing both the detail within a package and the wider impact across the project.

You are comfortable operating across both services and wider construction interfaces, with the judgement to lead commercial thinking in environments where CSA and M&E must be managed as one coordinated commercial picture.

You know how to build structure. Not just cost control, but governance, reporting discipline, commercial standards, and stronger alignment between pre-construction, operations, and finance.

You are credible with boards, clients, and internal teams alike. People listen when you speak because you understand the numbers, the contracts, and the delivery reality behind them.

About the opportunity

This is a chance to take on a broader commercial remit than a typical project-based Commercial Director role. A major campus development provides the platform, but the brief is much wider. You will help shape the commercial performance of the company as a whole, bringing leadership across live work, future work, and the systems that sit underneath both. This role has a total package value comfortably into the £150,000 to £180,000, full details can be released to serious applicants.
