Principal Building Control Surveyor (Interim)

Location: Grimsby
Rate: £75 per hour (Umbrella)
We are seeking an experienced Principal Building Control Surveyor for an interim assignment within a busy Building Control service. This role involves leading on major and complex projects, ensuring full compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation, while supporting a high‑performing, customer‑focused service.

On‑Site Requirements

Minimum 3 days per week on site (office or local inspection sites)
Friday working is essential
Earliest start time: 7:30am
Must be local or willing to work locally
Candidates without prior council experience will still be considered
Potential flexibility to split responsibilities between a 3‑day on‑site surveyor and a 2‑day planning‑focused role

Role Overview

The Building Control service ensures that buildings are designed and constructed in accordance with the Building Regulations, the Building Act 1984, and relevant legislation. The successful candidate will check compliance, identify risks, and ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken where standards are not met.
This role requires registration with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) under Part 2A of the Building Act 1984, as set out in Sections 58A-58M relating to the registration of Building Inspectors.

Key Responsibilities

Lead a team of operational building control surveyors, ensuring statutory obligations, service targets, and performance expectations are met.
Manage and lead on major and complex building control applications, working within the BSR competency framework.
Check deposited plans, technical drawings, and associated documents for compliance with Building Regulations and the Building Act.
Prepare schedules of required amendments, negotiate with applicants, and recommend approval or rejection within statutory timeframes and service KPIs.
Conduct site inspections to assess compliance, safety, sustainability, accessibility, and design quality.
Support and initiate enforcement action where non‑compliance occurs.
Carry out annual safety inspections at designated venues, advising on matters affecting public safety.
Provide professional guidance to support major corporate and strategic projects.
Contribute to a strong performance culture focused on service excellence, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Support the Building Control Manager and senior leadership team as required.

What We're Looking For

Proven experience in Building Control, including complex and major projects
Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, the Building Act, and enforcement processes
Ability to interpret drawings, technical data, and compliance documentation
Confident decision‑maker with strong communication and negotiation skills
Must be registered (or eligible for registration) with the Building Safety Regulator
