Position Overview

This role is responsible for delivering high‑quality building inspections and technical plan assessments across Class 2A‑F buildings. The inspector ensures compliance with relevant building legislation, codes, and standards, while supporting safe, compliant, and efficient construction outcomes. The hybrid nature of the role requires a balance of on‑site inspection work and detailed office‑based plan checking.

Key Responsibilities

1. Building Inspections

Conduct mandatory and discretionary inspections for Class 2A‑F buildings at key construction stages.

Identify non‑compliance, defects, and safety risks, and issue clear directions for rectification.

Prepare accurate, timely inspection reports and maintain detailed records.

Liaise with builders, surveyors, contractors, and owners to clarify compliance requirements.

Monitor progress to ensure works align with approved plans, permits, and regulatory frameworks.

2. Plan Checking & Technical Assessment

Review and assess building plans, specifications, and documentation for compliance with:

Building Act

Building Regulations

National Construction Code (NCC)

Relevant Australian Standards

Provide clear written assessments, recommendations, and compliance advice.

Identify design‑stage risks and propose practical compliance solutions.

Collaborate with building surveyors to support permit decisions and approvals.

3. Compliance & Regulatory Duties

Ensure all inspections and assessments meet statutory obligations for Class 2A‑F buildings.

Issue notices, directions, and compliance documentation as required.

Assist in investigations relating to building safety, complaints, or potential breaches.

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, codes, and industry changes.

4. Stakeholder Engagement

Communicate technical requirements in a clear, professional manner.

Build strong working relationships with internal teams, builders, designers, and regulatory bodies.

Provide guidance to support best‑practice construction and compliance outcomes.

🧰 Skills & Experience

Essential

Registration as a Building Inspector – Class 2A‑F (or equivalent under relevant state authority).

Strong understanding of NCC, Building Regulations, and Australian Standards.

Demonstrated experience in both site inspections and plan checking.

Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and documentation.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

High attention to detail and strong problem‑solving capability.

Valid driver's licence.

Desirable

Experience working with municipal or private building surveyors.

Knowledge of digital inspection/reporting systems.

Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.

Experience in multi‑unit residential or mixed‑use developments
