Freelance Health & Safety Manager – £90m High-Rise Scheme (Manchester)

Location: Manchester – Rate: £460 – £485 per day

The Opportunity

A major main contractor is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to support delivery of a £90m development comprising two high-rise tower blocks.

This role requires a hands-on, technically strong HSE professional who can operate at both site and strategic level – driving standards, influencing teams, and ensuring robust compliance across a complex build.

Key Responsibilities

Act as the lead Health & Safety advisor across the project

Provide expert guidance on UK legislation, ISO standards, and best practice

Support implementation and continuous improvement of HSE management systems

Monitor site activities to ensure full compliance from workforce and subcontractors

Lead incident reporting, investigation, and close-out, ensuring lessons learned are embedded

Oversee risk management processes, including identification, mitigation, and monitoring

Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and performance reviews, providing practical solutions

Support pre-start planning and high-risk work packages, ensuring safe systems of work

Build strong relationships with project teams, subcontractors and stakeholders to influence behaviours

Intervene where necessary to stop unsafe works and escalate appropriately

Support external audits and ensure timely close-out of non-conformances

About You

Strong background in construction HSE, ideally on high-rise or major projects

Demonstrable experience implementing and improving HSE systems and processes

Proven ability to lead incident investigations and manage risk

Confident influencing site teams and challenging behaviours where required

Strong communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels

Qualifications:

NEBOSH (or equivalent)

CSCS Card (Manager level)
