Talented People are partnering with a leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractor to recruit a highly capable Senior Design Engineer.
This is a key role for an experienced engineer with strong temporary works expertise, offering the opportunity to lead design delivery across complex projects while mentoring junior team members and influencing best practice.
The Role
As Senior Design Engineer, you will lead the development, coordination, and technical assurance of both temporary and permanent works designs, from initial concept through to construction issue. You will act as a central link between design teams, site operations, and stakeholders, ensuring designs are safe, compliant, buildable, and commercially effective.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design and delivery of temporary and permanent works in line with BS 5975, Eurocodes, and UK Health & Safety legislation
* Produce, review, and check calculations, drawings, reports, and risk registers
* Ensure designs are safe, practical, and aligned with site conditions and construction methodologies
* Manage multiple design packages, ensuring alignment with project programmes
* Act as the key interface between designers, project teams, clients, and supply chain partners
* Undertake site visits to assess conditions, support implementation, and advise on buildability and risk
* Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior engineers and technicians
* Support continuous improvement in design processes, digital engineering, and BIM/CDE integration
* Ensure appropriate temporary works categorisation, checking procedures, and design assurance documentation
Experience Required
* 7–10 years’ experience in temporary works design, including areas such as:
* Falsework and formwork
* Excavation support and propping
* Access platforms and crane bases
* Structural and geotechnical temporary works
* Proven experience delivering designs at both tender and construction stages
* Strong understanding of buildability, sequencing, and site constraints
* Experience producing and checking engineering calculations, reports, and risk assessments
* Sound knowledge of CDM Regulations and industry standards
* Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, external designers, and subcontractors
* Background across both site and design office environments (advantageous)
* Experience mentoring or leading engineering team members
Skills & Technical Competencies
* Strong understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards
* Proficiency in design and modelling software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Robot, Navisworks, InfraWorks)
* Working knowledge of BIM and Common Data Environments (CDE)
* Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and drawings
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Qualifications
* Degree (BEng/MEng) in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership (ICE or IStructE)
Certifications
* CSCS card (professionally qualified level)
* Full UK driving licence
