Technical Director – Fire Engineering
This is a rare opportunity to build and scale a fire engineering practice within an established, well‑resourced multidisciplinary consultancy operating across the UK and Europe.
As Technical Director, you will take a leading role in shaping an emerging fire engineering business, with the autonomy to grow the practice, define its market position, and assemble a high‑performing team. You'll be backed by a long‑standing global brand and a international platform of engineering and building science expertise, providing credibility, technical depth, and the infrastructure needed to scale.
You will act as the senior fire engineering authority in the UK, working closely with interdisciplinary teams locally and internationally. Your role will combine technical leadership, strategic judgement, and commercial awareness, applying deep fire engineering knowledge, advanced analysis and modelling tools, and expert interpretation of current and historic building regulations to deliver robust, pragmatic fire strategies.
Our client focuses on solving complex, high‑risk, and high‑value fire engineering problems, often where standard approaches fall short, and are widely considered the Gold Standard in this field.
Typical work includes:
Rapid assessment and delivery of actionable, cost‑effective solutions for challenging new designs and existing buildings
Investigation of façade fires, defects, system failures, and sudden incidents
Fire engineering input for refurbishment and remediation projects
Fire strategy development, detailed design, peer review, and specialist advisory services for new construction, across all RIBA stages
Beyond project delivery, this role offers genuine scope to build something of your own:
Develop and grow client relationships and repeat business
Recruit, mentor, and lead a fire engineering team as workload expands
Shape technical standards, tools, and methodologies
Contribute to research, innovation, and thought leadership
Build an external profile through professional bodies, industry committees, and speaking engagements
The right person will be excited by growth, having ownership, and making impact. They will enjoy tackling complex problems, be commercially aware, and will balance technical rigour with practical delivery. They will be comfortable operating independently at a senior level while collaborating across disciplines and geographies.
They'll be a Chartered Fire Engineer with an advanced degree in fire engineering or a related discipline, and will likely have 10+ years of relevant industry experience. They'll be actively involved in the Fire Engineering community, interacting and sharing knowledge with peers.
Candidates who have successfully launched, grown, or led a specialist practice or service line, and who are recognised within the industry for technical credibility and leadership are ideal
