Design Manager
About this Role:
Experienced / ambitious Design Manager required to work with a leading Tier 1 main contractor to manage the design process for a large new build student accommodation project in Southampton. The scheme comprises several large new build accomodation blocks, refurbishment of existing buildings, plus the refurbishment of a grade 2 listed building and associated infrastructure works
You will work closely with the Senior Design Manager on the scheme through the PSCA for the rest of the year, then the construction project team throughout the delivery phase over 2 years until 2029. This will be based with the preconstruction team close to the site in Southampton through PCSA, moving to offices on site through construction phase.
Reporting to the Regional Design Manager, you will manage the design development and buildability aspects of schemes through second stage preconstruction and out to commencement on site.
Duties will include:
Management of the design development for the project, packages and sections of works;
Chairing regular design team meetings;
Management of consultant design team;
Regular liaison with client and stakeholders;
Engagement with and managing specialist sub-contractor design teams;
Agreement of information required schedule; Ensuring key dates achieved;
Dealing with local authorities to achieve planning permissions;
Review of construction design information for buildability, compliance with contractors proposals, employers requirements, budget, current building legislation, new building safety act, etc;
Identifying opportunities for value engineering where appropriate;
Proactive issue resolution;
Overall managing the smooth and timely delivery of detailed design information for procurement and construction throughout the preconstruction and build process.
About the Company/Client/Project:
The company is the busy Tier 1 national main contractor, with experience and a proven track record in the delivery of large new build and refurbishment schemes in student accommodation, healthcare, commercial offices, education sectors.
Turnover is circa £150m+ for the region.
Requirements including certificates and qualifications:
Either from an Engineering/Construction delivery or Architectural background, you will possess excellent technical and commercial knowledge, a keen understanding of construction methodology, materials and systems, procurement lead in times, etc.
You will have excellent communication and negotiations skills, strong planning and problem solving ability, initiative and a positive approach. In terms of character, you will be a highly driven, positive and ambitious individual able to work well within a large team dynamic.
You will ideally have a proven track record of successful project delivery with a recognised Main Contractor in a Design Coordination / Design Management role.
This is an intermediate rather than senior level role, which is reflected in the lower salary banding, but also the high level of training and development that will be provided whilst working very closely with the Senior Design Manager.
