Main job:
Set out, check, and control lines, levels, and dimensions for concrete structures and civil works on construction sites. You’re the one making sure what’s built matches the drawings.Key ResponsibilitiesSetting out: Transfer design data from drawings/BIM to site using total station, GPS, or laserConcrete structures: Set formwork lines, slab levels, column/grid lines, pile positionsCivils works: Set kerb lines, drainage falls, road levels, foundationsQA & records: Check tolerances, produce as-built surveys, keep setting out booksSafety: Follow CDM 2015, site rules, and risk assessmentsCoordination: Work with site managers, steel fixers, formwork teamsIssue resolution: Spot clashes/errors early and propose fixesRequirements – UK 2026Quals: HNC/HND or degree in Civil Eng, Surveying, or GeospatialExperience: 2-5 years setting out on structures, civils, or building projectsSkills: Total station, GPS/GNSS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, 12D, RebarCerts: CSCS card, SMSTS a plus. TPS or RICS route if charteredKnowledge: BS EN tolerances for concrete, surveying methodsTypical DayAM: Download data, check drawings, issue levels to gangsWork: Set out formwork, pour checks, record as-builtsPM: Survey records, handover points to next shift
