Job Title: Building Services Engineer – Mechanical
Location: Preston, Lancashire
Salary: £42,000 – £52,000 per year
Role Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate is a proactive team player, commercially aware, and able to communicate effectively while working independently. You will deliver high-quality mechanical building services designs across a variety of sectors, from concept through to construction.
Key Responsibilities:
Produce mechanical building services designs for schools, offices, leisure facilities, government buildings, industrial facilities, and more.
Prepare feasibility studies, technical specifications, reports, and drawings.
Supervise the work and design quality of junior engineers.
Execute projects within defined design, programme, and cost parameters.
Conduct site surveys, inspections, and condition assessments.
Represent the company at meetings with clients and contractors.
Promote and incorporate sustainable design principles wherever possible.
Participate in design quality reviews and audits.
Maintain accurate records and project documentation.
Manage own workload and support junior staff where needed.
Support staff development to enhance team expertise and standards.
Collaborate with other disciplines, including architects and civil/structural engineers.
Monitor emerging legislation and standards in mechanical building services and ensure compliance.
Contribute to design change control, estimating costs/time implications, and fee proposals.
Engage in business development and innovation initiatives.
Perform additional duties aligned with management systems and project needs.Requirements:
Degree-qualified Mechanical Building Services Engineer, or equivalent experience.
Professional institution membership; CEng preferred or working towards CEng.
Proven experience in a similar building services role or design consultancy.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Experience with Hevacomp / TAS calculation packages.
Skilled in AutoCAD and Revit; experience delivering projects to BIM Level 2 is desirable.
Familiarity with QA procedures and high standards of design documentation.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to inspire, influence, and negotiate.
In-depth knowledge of Building Regulations, particularly Part L.
Understanding of quality assurance, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Ability to make decisions, work proactively, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Financial awareness with the ability to develop budgeting and costing skills.
Ability to build and maintain strong client and team relationships.
Excellent report writing, presentation, and meeting skills.
Knowledge of sustainability, passive design, and low/zero-carbon technologies.
Leadership skills, including mentoring junior team members.Benefits:
