Design Manager
The Design Manager will oversee the design processes for all design activities undertaken as part of the capital investment programme, from planning stages through to delivery. The Design Manager will work for the Head of Development and will work closely with other Head of Departments and a wide range of stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) from across the business in discharging these duties.
The Design Manager will be responsible for establishing and implementing design processes, based on the RIBA Plan of Work, that ensure the business discharges its statutory duties under the Building Safety and Health & Safety legislation and will establish with stakeholders and SMEs a range of technical standards to be support the capital investment programme.
Knowledge and practical experience in the implementation of programme and project management best practice is an essential requirement. Understanding the development of business cases, design change control and design risk management is essential skill, coupled with a good working understanding of programme and project governance.
Main Duties
* Develop and maintain design processes, tools, templates, and schedules.
* Establish and update technical standards in collaboration with stakeholders and SMEs.
* Ensure consistent implementation of design processes and maintain accurate project records (“golden thread”) across the project lifecycle.
* Support compliance with H&S legislation, building/fire regulations, and sustainability goals.
* Oversee and document deviations from technical standards and manage associated risks.
* Maintain systems for storing all design outputs from business case through to handover.
* Assist in creating and maintaining the development master plan and schedules.
* Support project governance, including the administration of PMO processes.
* Assess the design competencies of third-party consultants and contractors.
* Prepare appointment notices for CDM and Building Regulation Principal Designers.
* Lead monthly design process development workshops with framework partners.
* Support accurate capital project reporting, focusing on variances, risks, and trends.
* Challenge business cases and project assumptions to ensure SMART objectives and risk visibility.
* Ensure programme-level record-keeping and provide quality assurance against PMO standards.
* Influence and manage a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable:
* A University degree in and appropriate discipline: Engineering, Architecture, Project Management, Business and/or equivalent business / operational experience.
* Obtained or working towards professional membership of an appropriate Chartered Body.
* Understanding of Construction Design Management Regulations 2015.
* Understanding of the application and management of projects in line with RIBA stages.
* Understanding of CAPEX contracts i.e. NEC3 / NEC4.
* PRINCE2 or APM qualification.
* CSCS card holder.
* Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) practitioner or equivalent
* NEC3 / NEC4 Project Manager accreditation (or working towards).
