Fire Engineer
Ridgeway & Co are partnering with a leading multidisciplinary contractor design team to recruit a Fire Engineer based in Bury St Edmunds.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team delivering diverse projects ranging from £100K to £30M+, including award-winning residential, commercial, education, medical, and industrial schemes, with a growing portfolio of Passivhaus and complex technical builds.
You’ll be involved at every project stage, providing fire strategy, design coordination, and technical fire risk input. The role also includes site verification, peer review, and design validation for both in-house teams and external stakeholders.
Salary
Up to £67,500 + Car Allowance, Pension, Private Healthcare
Key Responsibilities
*
Identify fire-related design risks and propose practical mitigation strategies
*
Produce fire strategy reports, sketches, calculations and diagrams across all RIBA stages
*
Advise design teams on fire safety integration, evacuation planning, and occupancy considerations
*
Review employers’ requirements for fire safety risks and opportunities
*
Check design outputs for compliance with statutory fire regulations and best practice
*
Recommend fire-safe materials and construction methods, including fire stopping and compartmentation
*
Carry out site visits, inspections, and validation of fire safety installations
*
Prepare clear and detailed site reports with corrective recommendations
*
Liaise with fire authorities, insurers, building control and other regulatory bodies
*
Support post-occupancy and defect-related technical investigations
*
Stay up to date with current and evolving fire safety legislation
*
Provide support and mentoring to junior team members
*
Represent the company professionally in meetings and project reviews
Key Skills & Knowledge
*
In-depth knowledge of fire safety codes and guidance including:
BB100, BR187, BS 8629, BS 9990, BS 5839, PAS8671, BS 8579, BS9999, and Building Regs Part B
*
Understanding of CFD (fire & smoke modelling) and CEM (evacuation modelling)
*
Strong communication, coordination, and reporting skills
Experience Required
*
Minimum 5 years’ post-graduate experience in UK construction sectors
*
Degree or postgraduate qualification in Fire Engineering
*
Working towards IEng or CEng via IFE or similar institution
*
Registered fire risk assessor (or progressing toward registration)
