Job Purpose
As a Senior Site Manager / Project Manager, you will be responsible for leading the on-site delivery of high-profile heritage construction projects. You will manage all aspects of the build process, ensuring the successful execution of works to the highest conservation standards, on time and within budget. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring excellent technical knowledge, strong project management capability, and a passion for heritage and historic buildings.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
* Lead and manage heritage construction projects from pre-start to practical completion.
* Develop and maintain detailed programmes and schedules, coordinating all site activities.
* Monitor progress and implement corrective actions to address delays or issues.
* Manage site logistics, resource allocation, and subcontractor coordination.
Technical & Conservation Excellence
Interpret conservation specifications, drawings, and design intent with accuracy.
Ensure high standards of workmanship in line with heritage conservation principles and statutory guidelines (e.g., Historic England, CADW, etc.).
Liaise with conservation officers, architects, archaeologists, and specialist consultants.
Health & Safety
Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety regulations and company procedures.
Implement site-specific risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
Promote a culture of safety, quality, and environmental responsibility.
People & Stakeholder Management
Lead site teams and manage subcontractors with a firm but supportive approach.
Maintain regular communication with clients, consultants, and internal teams.
Chair and report on site meetings, progress reviews, and project updates.
Financial & Reporting Duties
Assist in the preparation and monitoring of project budgets and forecasts.
Manage procurement schedules and materials deliveries.
Maintain project records including diaries, reports, inspections, and variations.
Requirements
Essential:
Minimum 5–7 years’ experience in site/project management, including experience in heritage construction.
Strong understanding of conservation techniques, traditional materials, and listed building regulations.
Proven ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams and complex build environments.
SMSTS certification and valid CSCS card (Black or Gold).
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Strong organisational and IT skills (MS Project, Word, Excel).
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
Desirable:
NVQ Level 6 or higher in Construction Management or equivalent.
Experience working with conservation bodies such as English Heritage or the National Trust.
First Aid at Work qualification.
Knowledge of PAS 2035 or sustainable retrofitting of heritage properties.
