We are working with a well-established and growing Civil Engineering Contractor with offices in Redditch and Leeds. With a strong track record in delivering complex civil engineering projects from concept through to completion, the company operates across a broad range of sectors including water, infrastructure, highways, coastal defence, and railway civils.
As part of their continued growth and project success, they are now seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join the commercial team and help drive best value, cost control, and commercial excellence across their live projects.
The Role – Quantity Surveyor
You will take ownership of commercial management for multiple civil engineering projects, working closely with operational teams, clients, subcontractors and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and in line with contractual obligations.
We are looking for a freelance Quantity Surveyor with extensive experience in drainage, earthworks, and environmental infrastructure to join a dynamic infrastructure project in South Yorkshire. The ideal candidate should be local to the region and available immediately, capable of independently managing post-contract commercial responsibilities under NEC Option E.
Project Highlights:
* Deep drainage installations (6m+ depths)
* Complex earthworks with lime stabilisation
* Wetland and reed bed integration
* On-site Silt buster water treatment setup with chemical dosing
* Evolving earthworks strategy requiring meticulous cost tracking
Responsibilities:
* Lead the commercial management of Compensation Events (NEC Option E)
* Prepare and manage detailed cost submissions and applications for payment
* Collect, analyse, and compile site records, timesheets, plant returns, and material costs
* Liaise with project management and site teams to track change events and value works
* Manage subcontractor comparisons and support procurement strategy as needed
* Provide commercial insight and ensure accurate cost forecasting
Requirements:
* Proven experience in similar roles, ideally within earthworks, drainage, wetland construction, or environmental infrastructure
* Strong working knowledge of NEC Contracts – particularly Option E
* Ability to manage high volumes of commercial admin with excellent attention to detail
* Familiarity with PMI and Compensation Event processes
* Proactive, organized, and confident in operating autonomously
* Local to the South Yorkshire area (Rotherham / Barnsley / Sheffield)
Preferred Experience:
* Wetland construction and reed bed systems
* Lime stabilization methods and earthworks planning
* Complex drainage systems and temporary works
