I'm working with a global consultancy that is looking to appoint a Principal Electrical Design Engineer into its London Building Services team. This is a senior technical and leadership role, offering the chance to shape project delivery, mentor the next generation of engineers, and play a key role in driving growth across the business.
The Opportunity:
As a Principal Engineer, you'll combine design leadership with client-facing responsibilities, ensuring excellence across electrical design and wider MEP delivery. You'll take ownership of complex projects, provide strategic input, and act as a trusted advisor to clients.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading the electrical discipline on major building services projects from feasibility through to delivery.
* Acting as a project director or technical lead on complex, multidisciplinary commissions.
* Building and maintaining strong client relationships, supporting business development and repeat work.
* Supervising, mentoring, and developing senior and junior engineers within the team.
* Reviewing design strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and embedding sustainable design solutions.
* Overseeing resource planning, design programmes, and project budgets.
* Contributing to bids, proposals, and presentations to support business growth.
What My Client is Looking For:
* Extensive experience in electrical building services design, ideally across multiple sectors (commercial, residential, healthcare, education, mixed-use).
* Demonstrable track record of leading large projects and project teams.
* Degree in Building Services Engineering (or relevant discipline), with Chartered Engineer status (IET/CEng) or equivalent.
* Strong technical knowledge of UK regulations, codes, and design standards.
* Proficiency in electrical design software, with familiarity in RevitMEP or other 3D design tools.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and engage clients at senior level.
* A collaborative, leadership-focused mindset with the ability to inspire teams.
Technical Expertise (Electrical Design)
* Low voltage distribution, standby generation & UPS systems.
* Cable and lighting calculations (software and by hand).
* Fire alarms, security, and access control systems.
* Small power and structured cabling systems.
* Specialist systems including lightning protection and disabled call systems.
