Waste Enforcement Officer
What's involved with this role:
The Senior Waste Enforcement Officer will play a key role in ensuring the Council meets its statutory obligations in relation to waste management, fly-tipping, littering, duty of care offences and environmental crime. The role involves leading on enforcement activity, conducting investigations, issuing fixed penalty notices, preparing evidence for legal proceedings, and supporting junior officers. The postholder will also engage with residents, businesses, and community groups to promote awareness of waste regulations and support initiatives that improve local environmental standards.
Qualifications:
GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths.
Skills & Experience required:
* Experience of working in waste enforcement, environmental services, or regulatory enforcement.
* Strong knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Act 1990, Anti-social Behaviour legislation, Waste Regulations).
* Experience in preparing case files and giving evidence in court.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead and undertake enforcement action in relation to fly-tipping, littering, commercial waste offences, abandoned vehicles, and other environmental crime.
* Carry out investigations, interviews under caution (in line with PACE), gather witness statements, and compile case files for legal proceedings.
* Issue fixed penalty notices, statutory notices, and prepare legal documentation.
* Supervise and support Waste Enforcement Officers, providing guidance and ensuring work is carried out to high standards.
* Deliver awareness campaigns and engage with communities and businesses to encourage compliance with waste legislation.
