Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Our client is an established, multi-disciplinary design practice with a strong UK presence is looking to strengthen its building services team with the appointment of a Senior Mechanical Designer in its Manchester office.
With a diverse project portfolio spanning commercial, industrial, mixed-use, residential, and public-sector developments, the firm has a growing reputation for delivering high-quality, sustainable design solutions across the built environment. The engineering division works in close collaboration with architectural and structural teams to deliver integrated and innovative outcomes.
Location: Manchester (City Centre)
Salary: £45,000 to £55,000 (depending on the experience)

The Role
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mechanical building services professional to take a lead design role on a variety of projects, contribute to technical excellence, and mentor junior staff.
You will work on a range of medium to large-scale developments from concept through to construction, including both new-build and refurbishment projects. The role involves full ownership of mechanical design packages, stakeholder coordination, and input into the firm’s sustainability and net zero ambitions.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead mechanical building services design on assigned projects (HVAC, ventilation, plumbing, LTHW/CHW systems, etc.)
* Prepare technical calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports
* Ensure compliance with current building regulations, CIBSE guidelines, and low-energy design standards
* Coordinate designs with internal architecture and structural teams, as well as external consultants and contractors
* Attend and lead client and design meetings as required
* Conduct site inspections and provide technical support during construction stages
* Guide and mentor junior engineers and technicians
* Contribute to internal design reviews, technical development, and QA processes
About You
Essential Requirements:
* Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical building services design within the UK consultancy or multidisciplinary environment
* Proven technical skills in designing HVAC and mechanical systems for buildings
* Familiar with UK Building Regulations, CIBSE standards, and energy-efficient design practices
* Competent user of design tools such as Revit MEP, AutoCAD, and mechanical calculation software (e.g. Hevacomp, IES, etc.)
* Excellent communication skills and experience in client-facing roles
* Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple project deadlines
* Right to work in the UK
Desirable:
* Experience delivering projects in sectors such as industrial, logistics, commercial offices, data centres, or mixed-use schemes
* Understanding of BREEAM, net zero design principles, or similar sustainability frameworks
* Working towards or holding Chartered status (CIBSE / IMechE)
