🔥 Fire Door Installer – Prison Environment
💷 £230 – £240 per day
📍 Rochester, Kent
📅 Initial 2–3 month contract, with ongoing work available in other prisons
⏰ Monday to Friday, 39 hrs/week
This role will be working inside a Category C Prison
Please note: while initial vetting is not required, a full security clearance check will need to be completed for continued work within the prison service.
Position overview
We are working with a national contractor to recruit experienced Fire Door Installers for a secure facility in Rochester, Kent.
The role involves the installation and upgrading of certified custodial fire doorsets within a prison environment, ensuring compliance to FIRAS/BM Trada standards and delivering a professional finish across accommodation blocks, communal areas, and service facilities.
This is an initial 2–3 month project, with the opportunity for ongoing assignments across the prison estate for the same contractor.
Important good to knows
* Initial start will not require pre-vetting, but a full security clearance check will be carried out during your employment.
* All tools and materials will be provided.
* Parking available on site.
* Mobile phones and personal items cannot be taken past security checks daily.
* Work can sometimes be stop–start due to security gate clearances, occasional lockdowns, and movement through restricted areas.
* While areas are usually prepared, this is not always the case – you must be willing to work as part of a team to make areas work-ready.
* You will need to be a patient individual, adaptable to delays and changing circumstances.
* These are specialist custodial fire doors, not standard timber fire doors. Prisons use heavy-duty steel fire doors designed for fire resistance, security, and suicide-prevention.
Key responsibilities
* Install and upgrade certified custodial fire doorsets to compliance standards.
* Fit and adjust hinges, closers, locks, latches, intumescent strips, and smoke seals.
* Undertake remedial works on existing doorsets to ensure full compliance.
* Accurately record installations and remedials for compliance records.
* Work collaboratively with on-site estates and contractor teams.
* Ensure all work complies with FIRAS/BM Trada requirements and prison H&S/security procedures.
What you need to bring
* Proven experience as a Fire Door Installer with knowledge of certified doorsets (custodial experience highly desirable).
* FIRAS, BM Trada, or equivalent certification desirable (or experience working under such schemes).
* NVQ Level 2/3 in Carpentry & Joinery (or time-served experience).
* Ability to work in a secure environment and follow strict procedures.
* Previous experience in prisons, healthcare, education, or other secure/public buildings desirable but not essential.
* A calm, patient approach to working in a stop–start secure environment where flexibility is essential.
