Position overview

We are working with a national contractor to recruit experienced Window Fixers for a secure facility in Woking, Surrey.

The role involves the installation, repair, and adjustment of high-security custodial windows within a prison environment. These windows are not standard domestic or commercial types — they are designed for maximum security, durability, and contraband prevention, incorporating toughened or bullet-resistant glass, reinforced frames, and sealed ventilation systems.

This is an initial 2–3 month project, with the opportunity for ongoing assignments across the prison estate for the same contractor.

Important good to knows

* Initial start will not require pre-vetting, but a full security clearance check will be carried out during your employment.

* All tools and materials will be provided.

* Parking available on site.

* Mobile phones and personal items cannot be taken past security checks daily.

* Work can sometimes be stop–start due to security gate clearances, occasional lockdowns, and movement through restricted areas.

* While areas are usually prepared, this is not always the case – you must be willing to work as part of a team to make areas work-ready.

* You will need to be a patient individual, adaptable to delays and changing circumstances.

* You will be working alongside another fitter who will provide support, training, and guidance on the two-person installs.

* Prison windows are highly specialised and may include: reinforced metal frames with toughened or bullet-resistant glass; barless designs with sealed vents; cell observation panels made from Perspex or laminated glass; and blast-resistant glazing in higher-security areas.

Key responsibilities

* Install and repair custodial-grade window systems in a secure environment.

* Carry out glazing works with toughened/bullet-resistant glass and reinforced frames.

* Maintain and adjust sealed ventilation and observation panels.

* Undertake remedial works to existing custodial windows to ensure compliance.

* Work closely with estates and contractor teams to deliver a safe, compliant finish.

* Ensure all works meet prison security, safety, and quality standards.

What you need to bring

* Proven experience as a Window Fitter/Glazier, ideally with high-security or public sector projects.

* Skilled in working with uPVC, aluminium, or steel frames and specialist glazing systems.

* Ability to work in a secure environment and follow strict procedures.

* Previous experience in prisons, healthcare, education, or other secure/public buildings desirable but not essential.

* A calm, patient approach to working in a stop–start secure environment where flexibility is essential.
