Rare opportunity to join a growing further education college in Kent, to mentor higher level apprentices who are taking construction qualifications from HNC to Degree Level. Up to £48.7K, excellent benefits and career prospects.
Monday to Friday 8.30 – 5.00, some hybrid.
Our client is one of the largest further education colleges in Kent. Based at the Maidstone campus, with some travel across Kent, Sussex, Essex and London, the Construction Skills Mentor will support the professional development of apprentices across Levels 4 – 6 in Construction and Civil Engineering. This is a highly rewarding role focused on guiding apprentices, liaising with employers, and ensuring compliance with apprenticeship standards – without classroom teaching responsibilities.
You will work closely with apprentices, employers, and lecturers to ensure programmes run smoothly, evidence requirements are met, and learners are supported to successfully complete their qualifications and end-point assessments.
There is no classroom teaching responsibility with this role, but you will be required to address groups of students and have a structured approach to providing clear and accurate instructions.
Key Responsibilities
Initial Engagement & Enrolment
Ensure apprentices are registered on the correct standard and aligned HNC/HND/BSc programme.
Meet with employers and apprentices to explain course content, objectives, assessment processes, and end-point assessment requirements.
Employer & Apprentice Support
Confirm that employers can provide the appropriate scope of work experience.
Provide apprentices with clear guidance on required evidence, submission processes, and use of the Smart Assessor e-portfolio system.
Mark evidence, give constructive feedback, and monitor progress.
Progress Reviews
Work with HNC/BSc lecturers to track apprentice coursework.
Prepare and deliver progress reports to apprentices and employers every 10–12 weeks.
Document and follow up on objectives, development actions, and agreed expectations.
Monitoring & Development
Track learner progress, addressing issues such as late or poor-quality submissions.
Liaise with employers to put development plans in place where needed.
Support preparation for final projects and end-point assessments, ensuring employer sign-off.
Welfare & Safeguarding
Monitor attendance, behaviour, and conduct, taking action where improvement is required.
Ensure safeguarding and welfare concerns are identified and acted on appropriately.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Attributes
* Strong written and verbal communication skills at all levels.
* Excellent organisational and time management skills.
* Confident IT user with the ability to learn new applications quickly.
* Accurate report writing and timely data recording skills.
Industry Experience
* Knowledge of senior construction responsibilities.
* Previous experience in a construction management role is beneficial but not essential.
Education/Assessment Experience
* Ideally qualified in assessment (e.g. TAQA, A1, D32).
* Consideration will also be given to candidates with relevant training or assessment coordination experience.

Additional Information
* Travel is required to employer sites; mileage paid at £0.45 per mile (excluding normal commute).
