Senior Building Surveyor / Building Engineer

Location: Colchester (with travel to London & nationwide)
Salary: £55,000 – £60,000 + clear path to Associate / Director level

I’m working with a well-established multidisciplinary consultancy looking to appoint a Senior Building Surveyor or Building Engineer to lead their Major Loss Division — focusing on fire, flood, and subsidence claims.

This is a key role for someone with an engineering mindset, a passion for investigation work, and the ambition to take a lead in growing a specialist division with genuine career progression.

The Opportunity

You’ll take ownership of major loss and complex insurance claims, combining hands-on site work with design input, technical reporting, and client liaison.
You’ll also play a key part in shaping and developing the team — mentoring junior staff and supporting the firm’s expert witness and subsidence work.

Typical projects include:

Fire and flood damage investigations

*

Structural cracking and subsidence claims

*

Remedial and temporary works design (underpinning, retaining walls, beams, rafters, joists)

*

Forensic building inspections and expert witness reporting

*

Managing remediation contracts from design to completion

About You

We’re looking for a technically capable professional who’s confident leading complex work and enjoys a mix of design, investigation, and client interaction.

Ideally you’ll have:

Experience in insurance loss – particularly major loss (fire, flood, subsidence)

*

Engineering background – able to design and specify remediation schemes

*

C.Build.E status preferred (or proven equivalent experience)

*

Alternatively, an engineering degree with substantial hands-on experience

*

Ability to procure and manage remedial contracts

*

CAD ability – desirable but not essential

*

A calm, credible communicator who enjoys mentoring others

*

Ambition to step into Associate / Director level in the near future
