Tunnel Engineer
We are seeking a highly experienced and safety-focused Tunnelling Site Engineer to join a principal civil engineering contractor on a critical package of works at the Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station. This is a demanding, high-profile project where precision & compliance are essential and deep tunnelling expertise is preferable.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical assurance and successful delivery of tunnelling and associated underground works.
Key Responsibilities
Setting Out & Surveying: Execute and manage precise tunnelling setting out activities using Total Stations and laser guidance systems to ensure tunnels and associated shafts (adits, intake/outfall structures) are driven to exact specification.
Quality Assurance (QA): Lead on-site QA, conducting and signing off on inspections related to ground support, primary lining, and secondary concrete lining installation within the tunnels.
Technical Documentation: Oversee the preparation and management of all technical site records, including Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), as-built surveys, and Quality Inspection Reports (QIRs).
Operational Support: Provide continuous technical support to the Tunnel Shift Manager and site teams, resolving any issues related to alignment, ground conditions, or design discrepancies quickly and effectively.
Health & Safety: Actively enforce the highest standards of safety, particularly those relating to confined spaces, Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) requirements, and working-at-height within underground environments.
Ground Treatment: Provide engineering oversight for ground remediation works, such as grouting operations, to control water ingress and ensure rock mass stability.
