Design Manager – Education Projects (DfE Experience Required)

Location: Newcastle
Contract Type: Permanent (Full Time)
Rate / Salary: 65 – 75k

I am recruiting on behalf of my client, a well-established UK main contractor with a strong track record of delivering high-quality public sector projects. They are currently seeking an experienced Design Manager to join their team on a new Department for Education (DfE) project.

The company has successfully delivered numerous schools and academies across the UK, operating within national DfE frameworks. They pride themselves on innovation, build quality, safety, and the delivery of projects that positively impact local communities.

Role Overview

The Design Manager will take ownership of the design process from early concept through to construction delivery. You will coordinate consultants, sub-contractor designers, and internal teams to ensure technical accuracy, buildability, and compliance with DfE and Building Regulations standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the full design process from pre-construction to handover.

*

Oversee the production and coordination of design deliverables, ensuring compliance with DfE output specifications.

*

Review designs for buildability, technical integrity, and cost effectiveness.

*

Manage consultant and subcontractor design teams, ensuring deadlines are met.

*

Conduct risk assessments and promote safety in design.

*

Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and end users (schools / academies) throughout the project.

*

Chair design meetings and manage design programmes.

*

Ensure BIM and digital workflows are used effectively across all project stages.

Requirements

*

Proven experience as a Design Manager within a main contractor environment.

*

Previous involvement in Department for Education or other public sector school projects.

*

Strong technical knowledge across building systems, structure, M&E, and façade packages.

*

Understanding of CDM, Building Regulations, and planning requirements.

*

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

*

Degree or equivalent qualification in Construction, Architecture, or Engineering.

*

Ability to lead design teams and influence positive project outcomes.

Desirable:

*

Experience in modular / MMC or hybrid construction methods.

*

Familiarity with BIM coordination tools and document control systems.

*

Chartered or working towards professional membership (MCIOB, RIBA, ICE, etc.).
