MEP Technical Director
Our client is a forward-thinking, client-focused building services consultancy based in Harrogate, delivering high-quality engineering solutions across the built environment. This business has grown a portfolio of customers across the commercial and residential sectors, with a reputation for technical excellence and collaborative working.
As the company plans for the future, including facilitating the next phase of organic growth, they are seeking an experienced MEP Technical Director to lead the building services team and drive innovation and best practice. As the MEP Technical Director you will be responsible for the strategic and technical leadership of the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) engineering team of circa 10 staff. You will provide high-level oversight of projects, ensure design quality and compliance, mentor team members, and help drive business growth through technical excellence and client engagement.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide strategic direction and technical leadership across all MEP engineering services.
* Oversee the design and delivery of MEP systems on a wide range of building projects.
* Ensure compliance with all statutory regulations, industry standards, and best practice guidelines.
* Lead and mentor the team with a firm “inward focus”.
* Undertake technical reviews and sign-off of design documentation.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and design partners.
* Support the Directors in their efforts to secure new and repeat business opportunities.
* Contribute to the company’s overall strategic planning and direction as a key member of the leadership team.
* Promote a culture of innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
* Stay current with technological advances, regulations, and industry trends.
Required Skills and Experience
* Degree-qualified in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Extensive MEP experience within a design environment.
* Experience in sustainable and low-carbon building design.
* Proven experience in a senior leadership or director-level role.
* Strong technical knowledge across both mechanical and electrical systems.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and grow high-performing teams.
* Strong commercial awareness, resource management and project delivery skills.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client-facing skills.
* Proficient in the use of relevant design software and BIM workflows.
Desirable
* Chartered Engineer status (CEng) and membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., CIBSE, IMechE, IET).
* Business development or client relationship management experience.
* Working knowledge of BREEAM, WELL, NABERS, etc
