Assistant Estimator – Main Contractor – Exeter

My client is a specialist civil engineering contractor primarily focusing highways, S278 & hard landscaping packaged. With a reputation for quality delivery and long-term client relationships, we work across public and private sector projects ranging from £2m to £20m.

Role Overview

My client is seeking an ambitious and detail-oriented Assistant Estimator to join our growing pre-construction team working under the Senior estimator/estimating manager. The successful candidate will support the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates for civil engineering and infrastructure projects, working closely with senior estimators, project managers, and the wider delivery team.

Key Responsibilities

* Assist in the preparation of detailed cost estimates, tender submissions, and budgets for civil engineering projects.

* Analyse drawings, specifications, and tender documents to understand project scope and requirements.

* Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive quotations and assess best value.

* Support quantity take-offs, cost breakdowns, and benchmarking activities.

* Contribute to tender adjudications and value engineering exercises.

* Maintain accurate records of historical pricing data and supplier information.

* Assist in developing cost plans and cash flow forecasts.

* Collaborate with project teams to ensure a smooth handover from pre-construction to delivery.

* Support ongoing process improvement and innovation within the estimating function.

Skills & Experience Required

* 1–4 years’ experience in an estimating role within a civil engineering or construction contractor.

* HNC/D or degree in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

* Strong understanding of civil engineering processes and materials.

* Competent in Microsoft Excel and estimating software (e.g. Causeway, Conquest, Candy, or similar).

* Excellent analytical and numerical skills with strong attention to detail.

* Effective communication and teamwork skills.

* Enthusiastic, proactive, and eager to develop within a busy estimating environment.
