Mechanical Project Manager
1st Step Solutions are supporting one of the UK's leading Engineering Services companies who have an opportunity for a Mechanical Project Manager based in Peterborough on a permanent basis.
Our client is a leading building services contractor delivering high-quality mechanical, electrical services across sectors including commercial offices, education, healthcare and more.
Purpose of the Role
The Mechanical Project Manager will lead the delivery of mechanical building services works from pre-construction through to handover for projects. This person will ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards. They will act as the key interface between the client, main contractor, subcontractors and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage mechanical projects
* Lead pre-construction activities for mechanical scope: review drawings, specifications, value-engineering, prepare technical submissions, sub-contractor scoping and procurement.
* Manage mechanical subcontractors, suppliers and labour resources to meet programme, cost and quality targets.
* Oversee procurement of mechanical plant/materials, ensure best value, compliance to specification and timely delivery.
* Monitor project cost performance: prepare cost forecasts, manage variations, assist commercial team with cost control.
* Prepare O&M manuals, handover documentation, conduct defects management and lessons-learned reviews once projects complete.
* Support internal development: mentor site teams, engineers, apprentices assigned to the project.
* Attend project review meetings, progress reports, commercial meetings and other stakeholder engagements as required.
Required Skills & Experience
* Proven experience (typically 5+ years) in mechanical building services/project management within an M&E contracting or building services environment.
* Strong technical understanding of mechanical services – HVAC, plumbing, drainage, plantrooms, pipework, etc.
* Demonstrable experience of managing projects (or packages) through pre-construction, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover phases.
* Good commercial awareness: cost control, forecasting, variation management.
* Strong leadership, people management and interpersonal skills: ability to build relationships with clients, main contractors, supply chain and internal teams.
* Excellent planning, organisation, problem-solving and communication skills.
* Commitment to health & safety, quality and environmental management.
* Full UK driving licence (likely site travel).
* Relevant mechanical or building services qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) or equivalent experience preferred.
* SMSTS or equivalent health & safety qualification advantageous
