Shields (Driffield) Ltd is a leading UK engineering and manufacturing business specialising in protective structures and installations. They are committed to innovation, sustainability, and above all, a zero-harm safety culture across their offices, workshop, yard, and construction sites.

As the business continues to grow, they are looking for an experienced and proactive Health & Safety Manager to take the lead on shaping and delivering their health and safety strategy across all business areas.

The Role

As Health & Safety Manager, you’ll play a key role in promoting a positive safety culture, ensuring legal compliance, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance.

You’ll provide strategic and operational leadership across a varied working environment — from engineering and manufacturing to on-site construction and installation projects.

Key Responsibilities:

* Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s Health & Safety Management System in line with UK legislation and ISO standards.

* Oversee risk assessments, safe systems of work, and permit-to-work procedures.

* Lead audits, inspections, and incident investigations, ensuring robust follow-up and reporting.

* Deliver training, toolbox talks, and inductions to enhance safety awareness.

* Drive engagement in safety initiatives and champion continuous improvement.

* Support environmental management practices aligned with sustainability and net-zero goals.

* Advise leadership teams on H&S best practices and regulatory compliance.

* Work collaboratively with managers, supervisors, and external contractors to maintain safe, compliant, and efficient operations.

About You

A hands-on, collaborative professional with strong technical knowledge and the ability to influence and engage at all levels of the business.

Essential:

* NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum) or equivalent; Diploma preferred.

* At least 5 years’ experience in a Health & Safety role within engineering, manufacturing, or construction.

* Strong understanding of UK health and safety legislation and compliance frameworks.

* Experience with safety management systems (SMS), risk assessments, and incident reporting tools.

* Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:

* Chartered or working towards CMIOSH.

* Knowledge of ISO 45001 management systems.

* Experience in contractor management, environmental safety, and wellbeing programmes.

* Leadership or management training certification.
