Clerk of Works – Job Overview
In this role, you will act as the client's representative on site, ensuring the quality of both materials and workmanship meets contract standards, drawings, and specifications. You will carry out regular site inspections and prepare accurate and structured reports based on your findings. Projects are primarily residential (new build and refurbishment) and located across London and the South East.
Key responsibilities include:
Reviewing and interpreting drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and consultant reports
Monitoring site activity to ensure compliance with quality standards, Building Regulations, and Health & Safety plans
Liaising with the Employer's Agent, Quantity Surveyor, Architects, and Contractor's Site Team
Advising on materials, construction details, and sample approvals when required
Studying and applying relevant British Standards and Approved Codes of Practice
Documenting and reporting all inspections, issues, and progress through structured written reports
Assembling and managing site documents and clarifying usage procedures
Clerk of Works – Job Requirements
Circa 10 years of practical construction experience with a strong understanding of site operations
Membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works & Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI) or similar professional body
Excellent working knowledge of Building Regulations and construction quality standards
Experience inspecting cladding systems is advantageous
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Competence in preparing detailed technical reports
Full UK Driving Licence – ability to travel from home to site is essential
