Electrical Design Engineer (Junior to Intermediate) – Job Description

About the Role
We are looking for a motivated Electrical Design Engineer to join our building services team. You will assist in designing and developing electrical systems for a variety of projects across residential, commercial, education, and special-structure sectors. You’ll contribute to delivering efficient, buildable, and high-quality electrical solutions from concept through to completion, gaining experience and exposure across multiple project types.

Key Responsibilities

Assist in developing electrical design solutions, including power distribution, lighting, fire and security systems, and low-voltage services.

Prepare and produce design calculations, specifications, and technical reports under the guidance of senior engineers.

*

Create 2D and 3D drawings using CAD and BIM tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Amtech).

*

Collaborate with mechanical, structural, and architectural teams to ensure coordinated and integrated designs.

*

Support performance analysis of electrical systems for efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with standards.

*

Ensure designs meet UK building regulations, IET wiring regulations, and relevant sustainability standards.

*

Conduct site visits to carry out surveys, support construction teams, and resolve design-related technical queries.

*

Participate in design reviews and contribute ideas during value-engineering exercises.

*

Assist in project reporting, risk assessments, and quality assurance processes.

*

Provide technical support during the construction phase, including responding to design changes and producing as-built documentation.

Person Specification / Required Skills

*

Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

*

1–4 years’ experience in electrical design within building services or a consultancy environment.

*

Familiarity with CAD/BIM tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Amtech.

*

Basic understanding of electrical systems design, including power, lighting, fire, and low-voltage systems.

*

Knowledge of UK building regulations, IET standards, and sustainability frameworks.

*

Analytical mindset: ability to carry out and interpret electrical calculations.

*

Strong communication and teamwork skills, able to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

*

Organised, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple tasks under supervision.

*

Willingness to travel to project sites for surveys and design support.

*

Working towards professional development or chartership is desirable but not essential.
