We’re looking for a Senior Building Surveyor/Architect with knowledge and experience of working with historic properties to become part of our team in Wales. This is a great opportunity to join us.

This role will be based in North East Wales and there are requirements to be able to travel to our properties across the region.

This post will be part of the National Trust Cymru Consultancy team. This inhouse team of multidisciplinary experts form a great repository of skills talents and experience and enable our properties and places to benefit from an extraordinary range of creative and innovative thinking. We have deep expertise in all matters relating to caring for the nation’s special heritage and landscapes and making these places accessible to all.
You’ll bring to the team an in-depth conservation building/architectural knowledge, a high level of experience and the ability to work at pace in complex technical situations.
As this role covers North East Wales, your contractual place of work will be the nearest National Trust consultancy office to your home: Tredegar (Newport), Llandeilo, Erddig, Dinas or Penrhyn (Bangor). Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.
This role requires travel to various locations in Wales (some with very limited/no public transport available).
What you’ll be doing
The role is varied, challenging, and rewarding. You’ll mainly work across 3 portfolios in North East Wales, working alongside other consultants and property teams, in addition to being supported by the wider building surveyor community in Wales and nationally.
You’ll oversee all aspects of conservation and risk management of buildings and structures at our amazing places, acting as a lead consultant. You will develop and deliver a programme of planned improvements, preparing specifications, planning delivery and tracking progress from inception to delivery.
Your work will be focussed on a variety of small, medium and larger-scale project work (this can be conservation or compliance related). You’ll also provide expert advice, and delivery of building work to the highest conservation standards. You may need to act as project manager, utilising the Trust’s project management framework, and manage external advisers and contractors. You’ll contribute to project planning and lead building conservation condition assessments.
Managing and building strong relationships with stakeholders is critical. Your internal clients are usually National Trust General Managers and Facilities Managers. You’ll be involved with other NT specialists, and statutory and local authority officers. You’ll be able to clearly communicate the essential elements of the work and collaborate on finding the best solutions.
This role may also involve the line management of one or two Building Surveyors.

Who we’re looking for
An experienced Chartered Construction professional (MRICS/CIOB/ARB)
Experienced with Construction Project Management tools and demonstrate an ability to mitigate risk as proven by strong experience of contract management and contract administration in a supervisory capacity
Experienced in influencing others, in multi-disciplinary teams which will also include specialists from non-construction communities, with an ability to build strong relationships externally and internally and experience of working with external agencies, contractors and organisations
Capable, from direct experience, of managing and recognising quality work from external consultants in the role of a Client Construction lead
Able to demonstrate experience of financial responsibility for projects with exemplary data management
Strong knowledge of relevant legislative requirements relating to the role
