Location: Wickford, Essex
Salary: £60,000 – £75,000 (depending on experience)

Overview

A leading organisation in the structural and architectural steel sector is seeking an experienced Senior Steel Estimator to head up their estimating function. The successful candidate will play a key role in project planning, cost estimation, and the overall success of varied construction projects ranging from commercial buildings to complex residential structures.

Role Description

As the Senior Structural and Architectural Steel Estimator, you will lead the estimating department and ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and competitive cost proposals. You will mentor junior estimators, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and use your extensive industry knowledge to support high-quality project execution.

Key Responsibilities

* Manage and allocate incoming quote requests based on team workload and expertise.

* Keep senior management updated on deadlines to ensure all quotations are returned on time.

* Mentor and support junior estimators, encouraging their growth and continuous improvement.

* Lead the full estimation process for structural and architectural steel projects.

* Review project specifications, drawings, and blueprints to define scope and material requirements.

* Prepare detailed cost estimates covering labour, materials, and equipment.

* Work closely with project managers, engineers, architects, and clients to align on requirements.

* Identify cost-saving opportunities and value engineering options.

* Oversee preparation and submission of accurate, competitive bid proposals.

* Stay current with industry trends, material pricing, and advances in steel fabrication and construction methods.

* Assist with contract negotiations and material procurement.

* Monitor ongoing project progress and adjust estimates when project scope changes.

Qualifications

* Minimum 10 years’ experience as a steel estimator in structural and architectural steel.

* Strong understanding of steel components, fabrication processes, and construction methods.

* Proficiency with industry software (e.g., Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MS Excel).

* Excellent analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills.

* High attention to detail and precision.

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

* Proven leadership and mentoring ability.

* Ability to work independently and within a fast-paced team environment.
