Job Title: Quantity Surveyor – Highways Team Location: Hertfordshire

Role overview:
As a Quantity Surveyor in the Highways team, you will play a key role in managing the financial and contractual aspects of major highways projects. You will work closely with project teams, contractors, and clients to ensure the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget. Your expertise will help drive cost-effective solutions while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key responsibilities:
- Cost Management: Monitor and control project costs, including preparation and submission of valuations, cost estimates, and budgets. Ensure the efficient allocation of resources and keep track of expenditure.
- Contract Administration: Assist in the administration of contracts, ensuring compliance with contractual terms and conditions. Manage the procurement of materials and services.
- Risk & Value Management: Identify and mitigate financial risks and recommend opportunities for cost savings and value engineering.
- Reporting & Documentation: Provide regular cost reports, forecasts, and financial updates to project managers and senior stakeholders. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all project financials.
- Collaboration: Work closely with project teams, including engineers, contractors, and suppliers, to ensure successful project delivery. Liaise with clients to manage expectations and resolve any issues.
- Change Management: Oversee change orders and variations to contracts, ensuring accurate pricing and appropriate approval processes are followed.
- Compliance: Ensure all work complies with industry standards, regulations, and Balfour Beatty’s quality, health, safety, and environmental policies.
Key requirements:
- Experience: Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor in the construction or highways sector is essential. Knowledge of highways projects and their specific requirements would be an advantage.
- Qualifications: A degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related field. Membership of RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) is desirable but not essential.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of cost management and contract administration.
- Ability to prepare detailed cost estimates and manage budgets effectively.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients and contractors.
- Strong IT skills, including experience with quantity surveying software and Microsoft Office tools.
- A proactive and solution-focused mindset, with the ability to identify and address potential issues before they escalate.
- Location: Based in Hertfordshire, with occasional travel to project sites across the region.
