Company Overview

We are a growing construction company delivering a range of civil engineering and building projects across the Midlands. Our work includes infrastructure, groundworks, structural packages, and general building works for both public and private sector clients. Due to increasing workload, we are looking to engage an experienced Freelance Estimator to support tendering and pre-construction activities, with the potential for a long-term permanent role for the right person.

Role Overview

The Freelance Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates across a mix of civils and build projects. You will work closely with the commercial and delivery teams to price tenders, assess risk, and support successful project award. This role offers flexibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to become a permanent member of the team as the business continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare detailed cost estimates and tenders for civil engineering and building projects

Analyse drawings, specifications, and contract documents

Carry out take-offs and quantify materials, labour, and plant requirements

Obtain and assess subcontractor and supplier quotations

Prepare pricing schedules, bills of quantities, and tender submissions

Identify risks, opportunities, and value engineering options

Liaise with project managers, engineers, and directors during tender stages

Support post-tender clarifications and handovers to delivery teams

Maintain accurate estimating records and databases

Project Types May Include

Groundworks and drainage

Roads, paving, and infrastructure

Concrete and structural works

Commercial and industrial buildings

Refurbishment and new-build projects

Skills & Experience Required

Proven experience as an Estimator within construction

Experience across civil engineering and building works

Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and sequencing

Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications

Commercially aware with strong numerical and analytical skills

Experience working on freelance or contract basis preferred

Proficient in estimating software and Microsoft Excel

Strong communication and time-management skills

Ability to work independently while collaborating with a wider team

Experience with NEC and/or JCT contracts

Background in both subcontracting and main contracting environments

Relevant construction or commercial qualifications
