The role
The Senior Quantity Surveyor will be a key member of the project delivery team, supporting site teams and senior management on a daily basis. The role offers exposure to a varied portfolio of civil engineering projects ranging from approximately £200k to over £10m in value, including framework work, bespoke projects and emergency works.
You will be responsible for managing commercial performance, driving efficiencies, identifying opportunities and mitigating commercial risk while ensuring robust cost and value control throughout the project lifecycle.
Key responsibilities
The role involves producing accurate cost, value and cashflow reports, preparing monthly CVRs and forecasts, and managing project costs and financial performance. You will be responsible for upstream applications for payment, subcontract procurement, negotiation and financial management, and the preparation and agreement of interim and final accounts.
You will liaise closely with clients, consultants and stakeholders on commercial matters including variations, claims and additional payments. Working with the wider project team, you will forecast expenditure and cash recovery, share best practice, advise on cost efficiencies, identify and realise commercial opportunities, and protect the business from commercial risk.
You will manage main and subcontract agreements, working primarily with NEC and IChemE forms of contract. This includes subcontract procurement, post-contract management, supply chain engagement and ensuring contracts align with corporate governance requirements. You will also support internal commercial processes, meet reporting deadlines, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Key relationships
You will work closely with the Commercial Manager, the wider commercial team, project delivery teams, clients and consultants, subcontractors and external stakeholders.
Requirements
Candidates must have previous experience in the construction or civil engineering industry, with strong knowledge of NEC and/or IChemE contracts and a good understanding of construction law. You will have experience managing subcontract procurement and commercial processes, including cost control, forecasting and CVRs. Strong communication, numerical and IT skills are essential, along with excellent organisation and the ability to work to tight deadlines.
A degree or HND in Quantity Surveying, or equivalent experience, is desirable, as is membership of RICS or working towards it. A CSCS card, estimating experience and experience working for a direct delivery contractor would also be advantageous.
What’s on offer
The role offers a competitive salary alongside a comprehensive benefits package, including pension, life assurance, private medical cover, generous annual leave, flexible benefits, vehicle or car allowance options, leadership and management training, structured career progression, employee wellbeing support, volunteering days and long-service awards.
